This post is long – probably longer than what a post should be… But I don’t really care because if you sell digital photography services as your primary business, then this 5-minute read will save you months (even years) of struggle.
Here’s the truth.
Growing a digital photo studio is hard work. You’ve got to package your services, close new clients consistently, on-board them, deliver results for them, keep them happy, hire team members, train those team members, create processes… all in the hopes that ONE DAY you’ll have a healthy studio that generates a lot of profit and gives you the freedom that you desperately seek.
If you don’t know, before I launched my digital marketing agency, I used to run a successful digital photo studio.
But during the beginning stages of my photo studio, I did all of the typical “hamster wheel” stuff that other freelancers and service providers do.
- I created a profile on photo directories and waited for jobs (only to compete on price with a bunch of other people).
- I was chasing down uneducated leads who had no clue who we were, the value of what we did, or how it could help their business
- I tried cold emailing, cold outreach direct mail, lumpy mail, depending on our network for referrals…
All of the bootstrap stuff that people say you should do. Each month was a complete gamble. Some months we’d close $10,000 of business, and other months it would be ZERO. Sometimes we’d sit at zero for 2 or 3 months in a row… Plus, I didn’t start this photo studio to be a slave to the business… and trying to get clients the way I did it in the beginning is a massive headache.
Now we all know that in order to grow your business, you need a system that will bring potential clients to you automatically, right?

But what is the funnel that you should use if you are trying to sell Digital Photo Services specifically? Most “High Ticket Coaches” will ALL tell you the same thing… I know because I’ve invested over $100,000 in high ticket coaches over the years.

So, like any good student (who spends $100K+) should do… I followed their instructions. I spent countless weeks recording videos, scripting webinars, putting together content and email sequences. I created PDF downloads to capture emails.
Then I went and spent several thousands of dollars on Facebook ads. I generated email addresses alright… but who cares about email addresses if they don’t translate into clients, right?? For the amount of money and work I put in, the results were pretty horrendous. But throughout all of that, I had one pretty major epiphany.
Selling digital photo services is NOT THE SAME as selling high-ticket coaching.
The model is still very similar… But there are two key difference to note…
THE TWO KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SELLING SERVICES AND COACHING
1. Business owners who want Services “done for them” don’t care to learn
I realized that unlike my mentors, I wasn’t selling coaching… I was selling a done for you service. Think about it for a second – if your goal is to speak to someone who wants a done-for-you service like Location Photography or Studio Photography or Fashion Photography or any other Digital Photo Service, generally they don’t really want to learn and they just want it done.
They don’t care about understanding each component or HOW it works… they just want to know if you can get them the result they want. By nature, if someone wants coaching from you, they are willing to learn and implement what you teach them. Webinars and 3-part training’s are designed to educate, build trust, get the audience to “buy” into the coach by sharing stories.
But when I’m looking for a plumber to fix my toilet – do I care to sit through a presentation teaching me “how it works”? Nope.
Same thing applies to businesses who want digital photo services.
2. Digital Photo Services are a commodity.
With coaching, it’s the PERSON that you are “investing” in and no 2 coaches are alike. On the other hand, everyone is selling “Digital Photo Services” now-a-days. There are a bunch of courses teaching people how to run Photoshop™ Ads for clients and there certainly isn’t a short supply of digital cameras out there.
Because of that, the actual sales process on the phone needs to be adjusted.
This slight change in thinking COMPLETELY changed my approach to my Client Acquisition funnel. I revamped it to appeal to Business owners who wanted SERVICES, not Coaching. Once I did that, my calendar started getting completely filled every single week with new qualified leads who wanted to work with us – and close rates went through the roof. Anytime I turn on the tap, I get new clients. On demand. It’s a pretty incredible feeling not having to worry about money.
THE DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY SERVICES FUNNEL

Let me break it down for you and highlight the differences between the photography model and the coaching model.
1. We use Facebook™ ads. No need for explanation there… everyone is on Facebook™.
Regardless of whether your Dream Client is on FB or not, you need to advertise to them and not rely on organic.
2. We REMOVE the Lead Capture. Yeah… I know… not good practice.
But let’s be honest, do you want to work with people who want your services TODAY, or people who want your services in 6 months? Collecting emails is useless if you are trying to fill up your calendar today. Removing this step has allowed us to reduce the cost to get someone on the phone by more than 50%
3. The SECRET SAUCE is the “Video”.
It’s a short presentation that is structured to speak directly to your dream client and prove to them that you can help.
IT DOES NOT TEACH ANYTHING!
4. The goal of the Ignite Video is for them to schedule a QUICK 15-20 mins Discovery Call to qualify them
5. After the Discovery Call – if they are a good fit – we get them to take micro commitments through some sort of buy-in (this can be follow up homework, a deposit, etc)
6. Only after they have bought-in do we create a Proposal.
The KEY to a successful proposal is having a proven template to follow and PRESENTING it (never send your proposal before you present it)
